He said apart from many of his works being acclaimed, his poem Lori written in 2000, on female foeticide was highly acknowledged. “I would keep working for the welfare and development of Punjabi at all the forums at regional, national and international level,” he said. Having written 11 books on poetry and a book on prose and has been writing for the past 35 years. He said awards are an important part of promotion and encouragement of Punjabi literature, but the work also needs to be done in rest of the areas for the development and progress of the language including implementation of the Library Act. He has also authored several books including Mor Pankh, Pardarshi, Dharti Naad, Khair Panj Paniyan Di, Agan Katha, Bol Mitti }e Baweya. He has been bestowed with several awards including Shah Hussain Lifetime Achievement Award, 2011, Baba Bulleh Shah Poetry Award from Asian Writers Award, Surjit Rampuri Poetry Award, Puran Singh Poetry Award. “I owe the recognition to my parents, Dr SP Singh, my brothers Jaswant Singh Gill, Sukhwant Singh Gill and everyone who have helped and supported me,” said Prof Gill. He has also written 12 books in English and two Urdu novels. Prior to writing in Punjabi, he used to write in English and Urdu. He has written 10 novels, 10 literary books in Punjabi. He said he started writing in Punjabi at the age of 35, and has been contributing to Punjabi literature for the past 51 years. Prof Tasneem had also been accorded Shiromani Sahitkar Puraskar by the languages department of Punjab government in 1995. Prof Tasneem said, “It is good that my work for Punjabi literature has been recognised by the highest award at the age of 86,” he said. While Prof Niranjan Singh Tasneem has been selected for the Punjabi Sahit Ratan award, former president of Punjabi Sahit Akademi Prof Gurbhajan Singh Gill has been selected for the award of Shiromani Punjabi Poet.
